Commonage Projects presents ‘Contours’, a group exhibition with Ethan Caflisch, Adam McGowan and Seraphina Mutscheller, exploring structure and rhythm and how this might evoke lyricism in the natural world. These artists uncover underlying patterns and repeated marks or motifs, that evoke both physical outlines to even more subtle, or unseen, topographies and boundaries that shape place – or indeed self.

Through fluctuations of cadence, form and tone, and suggestions of human or elemental movements, such as ever-changing light, the artists ask us to consider our interconnectedness with our environments. Works suggest the continuously shifting edges of landscapes – from the macro to the micro. They all share an interest in material experimentation to create illustrations and gestures that both emerge from and dissolve back into abstraction.

Ethan Caflisch (b. 1993 Oshkosh, Wisconsin) started at a young age working in ceramics.
